Second sex assault lawsuit against school should be ‘wake-up call’

LANSING, MI — A second Lansing Eastern High student has filed a Title IX lawsuit alleging that administrators acted with deliberate indifference after she was sexually assaulted at the school.

The federal lawsuit was brought by a 14-year-old girl and is the second such action against Lansing Public Schools in two weeks. In unrelated cases, both victims allege school officials ignored their concerns and failed to shield them from a hostile environment that included humiliation and taunting from their peers.

The victims allege violations of Title IX for ignoring sexual harassment, as well as violations of equal protection laws.

“We’re just hopeful that the school district overall uses this as a wake-up call so that this doesn’t continue to happen,” Karen Truszkowski, the attorney for both cases, told MLive and The Grand Rapids Press. […]
